A-PRE-88TH-BIRTHDAY ANNIVERSARY MESSAGE

There are individuals whose lives become inseparable from the history and development of their communities. There are also those whose influence transcends their immediate environment and becomes part of the story of a nation. Chief (Dr.) Adebisi Bamdele Akande, CFR, the Asiwaju of Ila, belongs to this rare class of men.

For Ila-Orangun, Osun State, and Nigeria at large, Chief Bisi Akande is, without doubt, a gift to this generation. His life of service, leadership, courage, wisdom and commitment to the development of humanity has earned him a special place in the hearts of many people.

His story is not simply about politics. It is about a life devoted to public service and the advancement of society. It is about a man who has used his experience, influence and relationships to open doors of opportunity for generations of people.

A Legacy Written in Service

Chief Bisi Akande’s contributions to Ila-Orangun are particularly remarkable. As the Asiwaju of Ila, he has demonstrated that traditional titles are not merely symbols of honour but can also carry a responsibility to contribute meaningfully to the progress and wellbeing of one’s people.

Among his many laudable and landmark contributions is his role in facilitating the autonomy of the then Oyo State College of Education, Ila-Orangun, an important milestone in the educational history of the community.

The emergence of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Ila-Orangun, is another landmark development that has further strengthened the position of Ila-Orangun as an important centre of education and human-capital development. Such institutions do more than provide academic opportunities; they create possibilities for employment, professional development, research, innovation and socio-economic transformation.

For a community, the establishment and growth of institutions of this magnitude constitute investments in the future. They provide platforms upon which generations yet unborn can build their dreams.

This is why the contributions of Chief Bisi Akande to the development of Ila-Orangun cannot be measured only by political positions held or titles attained. His legacy is also visible in the opportunities created for people and the institutions that continue to serve the community.

A Man Who Has Transcended Local Politics

Chief Bisi Akande’s relevance, however, goes far beyond Ila-Orangun. His place in Nigeria’s political history and democratic development has made him one of the country’s respected elder statesmen.

It would therefore be unfair to attempt to measure the stature of such a distinguished statesman solely by the outcome of any particular election, especially at the local or state level. Elections come and go, political fortunes change, but the enduring value of a statesman’s contributions to society remains.

Chief Bisi Akande has attained a level of experience and national recognition that places him beyond the narrow boundaries of local politics. He is a statesman whose views, experience and leadership continue to matter in the affairs of Nigeria.

His support for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also reflects his continuing interest in the progress and stability of Nigeria. Whatever one’s political persuasion may be, the commitment of an elder statesman to the national project deserves to be acknowledged within the broader context of his life’s service.

A Prophet with Honour

There is a saying in Scripture that a prophet is not without honour except in his own country. In the case of Chief Bisi Akande, however, many people in Ila-Orangun and beyond have continued to recognise and honour his contributions.

To me, he is a prophet with honour and dignity—a man whose wisdom, experience and service have continued to speak for him.

Indeed, Chief Bisi Akande has done what many gods and goddesses could not do for their people. This powerful expression captures the depth of appreciation that many have for his contributions. It is not a reference to supernatural powers, but an acknowledgement of what one determined and visionary human being can accomplish through leadership, sacrifice, courage and commitment.

His greatest achievement may not be any single political office or public position. It is the enduring legacy of institutions, opportunities, ideas and people whose lives have been positively influenced by his service.

A Legacy for the Next Generation

One of the greatest responsibilities of leadership is to prepare the way for those coming behind. In this regard, Chief Bisi Akande’s story provides an important lesson for younger Nigerians.

Leadership is not about occupying a position forever. It is about using every opportunity available to make a difference. It is about building institutions that can outlive their founders, creating opportunities that can benefit generations and leaving society better than one met it.

The educational institutions associated with the development of Ila-Orangun stand as part of this enduring legacy. They remind us that the most valuable investments a leader can make are often those that empower people with knowledge and opportunity.

Chief Bisi Akande’s life therefore deserves to be celebrated not only because of what he has achieved, but also because of what his example represents: service above self, courage in leadership, commitment to community and dedication to the larger Nigerian project.

A Prayer for Long Life and Good Health

At this stage of his life, the greatest wish of his admirers, friends, associates and the good people of Ila-Orangun is simple: that Almighty God will preserve him in good health and grant him many more years.

May God continue to strengthen Chief (Dr.) Adebisi Bamdele Akande, CFR, the Asiwaju of Ila. May he enjoy sound health, peace, joy and fulfilment. May he live long enough to witness the continued growth of the institutions and legacies to which he has contributed.

May the seeds of his labour continue to produce fruits for Ila-Orangun, Osun State and Nigeria.

Chief Bisi Akande is more than a political figure. He is an elder statesman, a community builder, a repository of experience and, indeed, a gift to a generation. His story is a reminder that one person’s commitment to service can positively influence the destiny of an entire community and contribute to the progress of a nation.

May the Asiwaju of Ila continue to age gracefully, in good health and with renewed strength. May his remaining years be long, peaceful and purposeful, and may his name continue to be remembered with honour by generations yet unborn.
