Professor Oluwole Ayoola Atoyebi was born on November 9, 1953.
Atoyebi hails from Ile Elemona of Ila-Orangun in Osun State has his secondary school education at Oyan Grammar School, Oyan from 1966 to 1969. he was the overall best final year student of his alma matter with seven distinctions at the West African School Certificate Examination.He enrolled at the University of Lagos for his Preliminary medical course in 1972 and was awarded KB Prize for Best Medical Student in Basic Science in 1973, During his MB.BS training, the erudite scholar almost won all the available undergraduate awards. For instance, he won the Birmingham Prize for Best Medical Science in 1973, Glaxo Prize for Best All round performance in medicine in General (1976/1977) May and Baker Prize for Best All-round Performance in Medicine in General (1976/1977).
He began his professional career in 1977; during his internship at the famous Adeoyo Specialist Hospital, Ibadan. He was the Medical Officer (NYSC) at Moro Local Government, Kwara State,(1978/1979) and the Resident Medical Officer at Alalade Memorial Hospital, Lagos. He returned to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital for his Postgraduate Residency Training from 1980 to 1985. He did a five-month clinical attachment at the West Lotlian Burns and Plastic Unit, Scotland.
From 1985 to 1988, he was the General Surgeon to Salvation Clinic Limited, Lagos. He was appointed Senior Registrar in the Department of Surgery, LUTH in June 1988 and became a full Consultant Surgeon in 1990. Atoyebi applied for and was appointed Lecturer 1 in the Department of Surgery of the College in October 1992. In 1997, he rose to become Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor in October 2000 and in October 2005, the Governing Council of the University of Lagos appointed him a full professor on prima facie basis.
The eminent scholar has numerous medical publications to his credit in both local and internationally acclaimed journals books. He has presented over 15 quality papers at conferences within and outside the country and has supervised over 15 post-graduate research works.
The untiring medical guru has worked on another three research topics: the Multi-disciplinary Study of the Source and Patterns of Nosocomial Bacterial Pathogens in Surgical infection, Muiti-disciplinary Study of the Value of Fine Needle Aspiration Cyology in the Management of Breast Disorders in Nigeria and Multi-discipline study of Characteristics of Male Breast Cancer in Lagos.
Prof. Atoyebi has played active roles within and outside the University of Lagos. He has been an examiner for the MB.BS Examinations in the University of Lagos since 1990; Coordinator, Intensive Basic Medical Science Course, Faculty of Surgery and National Post graduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) since 1995.
He is an Examiner and External Examiner for Primary Part I & II Final Examinations for FMCS, West African College of Surgeons and University of Calabar. He is also on the Editorial Board of the Lagos Journal of Surgery and Nigerian Journal of Medicine and Medical Sciences.
Prof. Oluwole Atoyebi was Provost, College of Medicine, University of Lagos for five years. He is also the President of the prestigious Ila Charity Club. Happily married to a seasoned medical doctor, Dr. Oluwatoyin Olaide Atoyebi nee Odugbemi of Okeigbo in Ondo State and the union is blessed godly children and grandchildren.
